I was awaken by the sound of winds literally crashing the window panes. It was raining quite heavily (NZ standard) and I was freezing.
Got up to check my uploads and realised that my power supply to the laptop was off. I thought the rain (or maybe lightning, if they have it here) blew my adapter. I panicked!
Then I felt something wrong. I flicked on my study lamp and there was no light. Ok. Power failure.
The first thing that came into my mind was the main switchboard. It gave us some problems before so I quickly assumed it was the culprit. I flicked some switches but there was no response too. It was then that I realise it was a real blackout.
I soon found out that the blackout affected our water supply and the entire Auckland CBD. Some of my housemates were so pissed at the blackout because their exams got postponed!
Our apartment building (or maybe the rest of Auckland buildings too?) is so reliant on electricity that when the blackout happened, we were totally isolated from the outside world. No internet, no telephone, no lights, no water, can't cook, can't even flush the toilets!
We were in that state for more than 7 hours. Thankfully, our RA were very thoughtful and they organized a BBQ to feed our growling stomachs! My housemates were so nice, they walked down and climbed 13 levels to get us food!
